Strategically, I had placed Craigslist ads in several cities across the US, with open invitations for men to meet me at their local coffee shops. For each city that I had placed an ad in, I spent time on gay dating sites, finding men who looked somewhat like myself, and invited them to the same coffee shop where my rendezvous were to take place. Instead of dating him myself, the Craigslist ads would assure that my doppelganger was about to depart on a series of blind dates. On the day my subjects would meet, I erased my internet presence entirely, removing myself from what has been started. The dates had no way of being tracked; the outcomes are a complete mystery. I am left only with the spreadsheets I was forced to create to tell them all apart from one another; it was the sheet music of my symphony. The spreadsheets, used to help differentiate my subjects, are color coded, complete with a rating system, notes, and profile photos. They have been arranged into a map, visually communicating the patterns of matches I had made in each city.

SPEED DATING lives up to its namesake by matching a large group of participants, for limited cycles of time, with a good amount of alcohol. It was originally arranged as a kiosk, having dates approach collaborator Aurelia Cotton and I at a table, however I have since embraced the comical dance of traveling from table to table as a mating ritual. Held in galleries and auditoriums alike, it functions in both high and low cultural contexts.

Using formats and scenarios insensitive to my subjects, communication is purposefully distorted between all attendants. I employed this concept to humiliate participants in DATING AUCTION, a performance true to its namesake, held at a bus stop in Downtown Providence, RI. Contestants were auctioned off to the highest bidder waiting for bus 42, where the maximum bid of the afternoon reached two dollars.

Using a loophole, I entered a heterosexual marriage between two homosexuals in platonic love. MY WEDDING (both its title and a legal fact), took place in the Memorial Hall Gallery, formerly The Central Baptist Church in Providence, RI. I hosted my own gay wedding in a space that was both secular and historically spiritual. MY WEDDING involved vows, signing of the marriage license, cake and dancing. Inclusive of all these elements, it was no different from any wedding aside from the context of a gallery opening; inviting the art community to witness the ceremony is to diffuse reality and artistry.

This graphic mural is part of a contemporary renovation of the historic Christian Fellowship Church in Downtown Miami. The multi-use space is part of a series of rooms being redesigned as meeting locations for children ages 8-18 years old. The concept and design are inspired by the youth that will use the space as well as paint the design. (Currently in production)

I started to approach dating with a mathematical model (Subject(2) + table setting + flowers = date), designed to degrade its subjective value. Using tablecloths, doilies, and candles to characterize a standard dating scenario, two children were sent on a date, as were a pair of Lovebirds and a pair of mice, followed by the dating of spirits with the living. By utilizing a format that is inapplicable to the nature of these subjects, the trials become destined for failure from the outset. The parameters I set in place dictate their lack of actual possibilities and limit them to mere acts. These dating exercises are designed to be displayed as documentation of my research and development. KID DATE is conveyed as a narrated slide show; I recount anecdotes of two children on an outing to their favorite restaurant, Burger King.

After SPEED DATING, an insensitive adjustment to my mathematical model (Subject(2) + table setting + candle = date) lead me to create OUIJA DATE. A setting consisted of a table supporting two adjacent hand carved Ouija boards lit by candle light. OUIJA DATE contains 90% of the same elements as previous dating experiments, however, promised a supernatural romance in less than three minutes.
